Watercolor botanical art by Åsa Zandelin
The artist: Åsa Zandelin

Hi, my name is Åsa.

I'm an artist based in the south of Sweden, where I live with my husband and our two small dogs.

Inspired by nature and the subtle wonders around me, I paint and draw what I notice. Through watercolor, colored pencils, and ink, I explore light, detail, color, and the still beauty of the natural world that speaks so deeply to me.

A watercolor painting of a male Redstart

I painted this in late 2025.
After painting a female Redstart earlier, I became more aware of how different they are. We were lucky to have both a male and a female visiting our garden just outside the kitchen, which made the contrast even more striking.

Colored pencils were my first love and remain one of my favorite mediums. When I began taking my artistic journey more seriously in 2016, they were what I reached for again and again.

They were always there, easy to pick up, requiring little space, ready whenever I had a quiet moment to create. Eventually, I began combining watercolor with colored pencils, drawing on top of painted surfaces. I fell in love with the layering, the dialogue between the two.

Watercolor has since become the medium I return to most often, and most of my paintings are created using it.

Over time, I also explored oil pastels and soft pan pastels, each bringing something new to my process. More recently, fine liners have found their way into my work and quickly become a favorite, simple, expressive, and endlessly versatile.
